Who we are

RBDR is a medium sized firm that started in the early 1940s. And while we’ve helped clients across Texas, in other states and even several foreign countries, our Hearts and our home base have always been solidly rooted in Waco and Central Texas. Throughout our history, we have built our reputation on dedicated service, creatively combining our technical and design expertise to find unique solutions while navigating budgetary and practical constraints.

Partners

  • David E. Wright
    RA, LEED AP BD+C

    David E Wright Photo David joined RBDR in 1997. Over the years, he has honed his craft as a skilled organizer and thoughtful strategic planner, having worked in all major facets of the profession. Today, as a senior partner, David’s responsibilities are in the areas of firm and project management, planning, and technical production; although he also regularly manages projects from inception to completion.

    David has developed expertise in a wide variety of project types and typologies, from small private enterprise to large federal government contracts. Always available to the client, he has built meaningful long-term relationships with a variety of institutions, including multiple Texas municipalities.

    David has served as president and newsletter editor/publisher of the AIA Waco chapter and is a LEED Accredited Professional. David’s depth of experience, and thoughtfully applied skill as a practitioner make him an invaluable resource and key team leader for any project.

  • Bernadette Conrad Hookham
    AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C

    Bernadette Conrad Hookham Photo Bernadette joined RBDR in 1999. She is the President of RBDR and partner-in-charge for all Baylor University, McLennan Community College, and State Projects. Additionally, Bernadette’s experience includes primary and secondary education, religious, commercial, and healthcare work. She is licensed in Iowa and Louisiana in addition to Texas.

    Throughout her decades-long client relationships, she has earned a reputation for giving everything to her projects with ultimate accountability and dedication. Bernadette is a committed team leader who stays involved with every aspect of a project from programming through construction. As RBDR’s sustainability expert, she has led numerous projects through the LEED accreditation process and is dedicated to producing environmentally responsible buildings for Central Texas.

    A past Chapter President of the AIA Waco chapter, Waco Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees, and the Historic Landmark Preservation Commission; Bernadette now volunteers her time in the community serving on the Waco City Center Board, Waco Business League, and National Charity League.

  • Michael Papernov
    AIA, NCARB, RID

    Michael Papernov Photo A passionate design leader in the office, Michael works collaboratively with clients to maximize the positive impact of every project. His distinctive style combines technical expertise with creative problem solving to develop building solutions that are functional, aesthetically appealing, and tailored to the client’s needs.

    Michael has lived across the country and traveled abroad extensively. Having moved from New York City, he originally joined RBDR in 2013. With educational backgrounds in biology and architecture, Michaeli embraces the diverse challenges of an eclectic range of building typologies including civic, commercial, multi-family, higher education, financial, and others. He has been involved in many of Baylor University’s BRIC projects, combining his love of science and design. Michael has also worked with a variety of urban plaza and park spaces, having recently completed the Bridge Street Improvements for the City of Waco, where he worked closely and effectively with multiple stakeholders. He is currently managing projects for the City of Waco, Baylor University, and The Salvation Army. Michael has served as the Section Director for AIA Waco and is a member of Waco Rotary.

  • Kristin R. Rose
    AIA, NCARB, RID

    Kristin Rose Photo Kristin is a uniquely devoted practitioner and dedicated servant-leader. By listening closely to her client’s needs and rigorously maintaining clear communication, she consistently delivers projects of the highest quality while building meaningful enduring relationships along the way. A native Central Texan, Kristin is especially passionate about crafting architecture that is uniquely grounded in context and community, producing places that add value by elevating everyday human experiences.

    Skillfully wearing many hats for the firm, her responsibilities include master planning, programming, design, and project-management. Her project experience includes religious, higher education, financial, commercial, civic, and healthcare work. Kristin most recently completed work on a new award-winning ground-up dental clinic in Waco and two new ground-up building branches for American Bank.

    Kristin draws from her insights gained during her time abroad, having spent multiple semesters in Europe and South America throughout her education. After she obtained her graduate degree, Kristin chose to return home to Waco and joined RBDR in 2012. An active member of the American Institute of Architects, she recently served as the Director of AIA Waco and continues to serve the Texas Society of Architects in various capacities.

Our Team

We’ve assembled a team of architects, designers and partnering entities whose experience and talents are as diverse as our clients. And although they’re widely recognized for their technical and professional abilities, our team members - from lead architects to CAD technicians to administrative staff - understand that their most valuable asset is to be good listeners. We start each project by listening carefully to our clients’ needs so that we can find the best way to make their vision a reality.

Senior Staff
  • J. Grant Dudley
    RA

    Grant Dudley Photo A second-generation Architect, Mr. Dudley brings over 40 years of broad-range industry experience across many project types and sizes, including work on historical downtown properties, multifamily, higher education, and healthcare projects. Being a partner emeritus, he now serves in the role of quality control of construction detailing and documentation at RBDR. Grant takes great pride in ensuring that every project is designed, detailed, and documented in a manner that maximizes quality, building performance, and value for our clients. He is an invaluable resource and key team leader for any project team. Grant has held the office of President in the local AIA chapter on 3 occasions and has served on numerous Texas Society of Architects Committees. Also, an active leader within the community, he is a former board member of CareNet, the City of Waco Building Standards Commission, and the Art Center of Waco Board; where he has been instrumental in shepherding an exciting phase of facilities growth and expansion.

  • Casey Wells
    IIDA

    Casey Wells Photo Originally from Llano, TX, Casey and her husband moved to San Antonio upon graduating from Baylor University. Eight years later, they returned home to Waco to raise their family. She is a broadly experienced interior designer having been with RBDR since 2021. Casey became NCIDQ certified and a Registered Interior Designer in July 2023. She is a professional member of IIDA and actively participates in the local AIA section. With a great talent for space planning, finish selection, and organization, Casey is our resident interior design expert. She is always eager to research technical information for the best possible solution for each individual project. Casey is involved in all project phases and has experience in civic, healthcare, financial, office, primary and secondary education, and religious works. She is a skilled communicator that is resolutely dedicated to best serving the needs of the client. Casey recently completed two fire station projects, one in Ennis and another in Waxahachie.

  • John Pena

    John Pena Photo A third generation Wacoan, John has been with RBDR for more than 25 years and is an integral part of our technical team. Over his career, he has amassed a wealth of experience and has developed a great depth of understanding of building technology and construction science. He combines his industrial insight with a discerning artistic eye and excellent organizational skills, allowing him to produce extraordinarily clear construction documents for even the most complex projects. John sees each of his projects through to the end of construction, ensuring that each one meets or exceeds the owner’s expectations. Most recently, he has worked on several large church projects, financial institutions, and a new dental clinic in Waco. John is always eager to take on the next challenge.
