The City of Waco Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is now no-kill and a national model for reform. This project is the culmination of years of work throughout the community and a desire to make a tangible difference in how animals are treated and prepared for a new chance at life. The new adoption center connects to the original building by pergola over an engraved donor brick pathway. Expansive glass walls surround the lobby and retail areas. The building also includes offices, restrooms, breakroom, vaccination area, and a large meeting room. The new U-shaped shelter building contains 116 climate controlled indoor/ outdoor stainless steel kennels, laundry/ kitchen, storage, bathing, restrooms, and a dedicated puppy room.

The architecture relates to the existing buildings through materiality and overall massing while incorporating a playful tone to facilitate engagement with the animals and lead to a high percentage of adoptions. Outdoor meet/greet/play areas connect the buildings and are fully covered by a pavilion with lighting and air circulation. Special attention was given to the functionality of all spaces including the plumbing support in the kennels and play areas to the durability of the finishes throughout.
